Women’s Ballon d’Or for the first time: Spain and Barcelona midfielder Etana Bonamati won the award

Spain and Barcelona midfielder Aitana Bonamati has won the Women’s Ballon d’Or for the first time.

The 25-year-old enjoyed a hugely successful year as he helped his club win the Spanish top flight and the Champions League and helped his country win the World Cup in the summer.

She was also crowned UEFA Player of the Year in August.

England goalkeeper Mary Earps finished fifth while her teammate Rachel Daly finished 10th.

The nominees also included fellow Lionesses Millie Bright and Georgia Stanway.

She concluded her speech in English by saying: “Finally, congratulations to the other nominees. They are great footballers.

“We have a responsibility to be role models on and off the field. We must continue to lead by example more than just athletes and fight together for a better, peaceful and equal world.”
